| TEDxUNC, an innovative conference with a Global Initiatives theme, is coming to Chapel Hill next Saturday, January 21.
Organized and hosted by Carolina Creates, the TEDxUNC conference will feature eleven unique speakers who will be covering a wide range of global topics ranging from the nonprofit pharmaceutical sector to the impact of sports on the lives of women.
Speakers include:
- Dennis Whittle (Philanthropy)- President of The Whittle Group, co-founder and former CEO of GlobalGiving; former lead economist and senior partner of the World Bank’s Strategy and New Products Unit
- Dan Ariely (Economics)- Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics; New York Times bestselling author of “Predictably Irrational” and “The Upside of Irrationality”
- Shamila Kohestani (Athletics)- Captain of the first Women’s Afghan National Soccer Team; recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2006 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles
- Victoria Hale (Health)- Social innovator and founder of the nonprofit pharmaceutical company, The Institute for OneWorld Health; currently developing Medicines360, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company creating medicines for women and children
- Alan Murray (Journalism & Communications)- Deputy managing editor and executive editor, online, for The Wall Street Journal; author of three best-selling books, including “Revolt in the Boardroom: The New Rules of Power in Corporate America” (2007) and “Showdown at Gucci Gulch” (1987)
- Poetic Portraits of a Revolution (Art)- Group of poets who traveled to Egypt and Tunisia during the Arab spring to document the revolutions through a poetic lens
- Joe DeSimone (Chemistry)- Chemical engineer and the Chancellor’s Eminent Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; recipient of the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize
- Kate Otto (Public Health)- Public Health consultant and HIV/AIDS activist working to develop World Bank’s “eTransform Africa” initiative; founder of the “Everyday Ambassador” project
- Holden Thorp (Higher Education)- UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor, Kenan Professor of Chemistry, member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- Greg Van Kirk (Social Entrepreneurship)- Senior Ashoka Fellow and creator of the MicroConsignment model – a sustainable, replicable means of delivering health-related goods and services to remote Guatemalan and Ecuadoran villages using entrepreneurship, empowering villagers to help themselves
- John McGowan (Humanities)- University of North Carolina’s Ruel W. Tyson, Jr. Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and Director of UNC’s Institute for Arts and Humanities
Cultural and musical acts will perform throughout the event, including performances by Mipso Trio, Bhangra Elite, and VIRGINS.
Although tickets are no longer available, the TEDxUNC Organizing Committee encourages students, alumni, faculty, and community members to view the entire conference, which will be live-streamed online via www.tedxunc.com.
